Robin (49) from Rotterdam has completely turned his life around after struggling with a severe gambling addiction. Over 20 years, he lost €200,000 and multiple relationships, but he managed to rebuild his life. Today, he works in the financial department of the Gambling Authority, contributing to a safer gambling industry.

A Difficult Start

Robin’s gambling journey started at a young age. What began as a joke quickly spiraled out of control. As a teenager, he played on slot machines in a local snack bar. During his college years, things got worse. Instead of attending classes, he spent most of his time in gambling halls, drawn by the constant temptations.

Financial Problems and Debt

Over the course of his gambling addiction, Robin lost approximately €200,000. He accumulated debts through five credit cards and multiple loans. For a long time, he managed to keep his addiction a secret. His partner was unaware, as Robin went to great lengths to hide his bank statements. Only once did a casino ask him if he was doing okay.

In 2005, his addiction finally came to light. Robin sought help, but treatment at the mental health organization GGZ was not effective. His gambling continued, and the situation remained dire.

The Turning Point

Robin realized that he needed to change his life fundamentally. He sought help from a psychologist, where he learned to express his emotions. He also joined the AGOG foundation (Anonymous Gamblers and their Families), which provided support in overcoming his gambling behavior.

When applying for a job at the Gambling Authority, Robin chose to be open about his past. His honesty was appreciated, and he secured a position in the financial department.

Lifelong Vigilance

Robin believes that a gambling addiction is never fully cured. He doesn’t consider himself an “ex-addict” and says that resisting temptations is a lifelong challenge. Despite this, he now handles the allure of gambling effectively and is determined to help others.
