Winning Ticket for $1 Million Claimed Just in Time
A couple from Kendallville found their winning Powerball ticket and claimed a $1 million prize just five hours before the deadline.
A Last-Minute Search
The couple was unaware of their big win. After a notice from Hoosier Lottery, the Powerball organizer in Indiana, they began searching for their ticket. A month before the deadline, they couldn’t find it and assumed they hadn’t won anything.
Just before Christmas, the lottery issued another reminder. This time, the couple resumed their search and eventually found the ticket in their car, just five hours before the deadline.
How It Started
On June 29, 2024, a Powerball drawing took place. Two tickets won $1 million each. The couple from Indiana, who eventually turned in their ticket, did not match the Powerball number, just like the winner from New Jersey. The $115.5 million jackpot remained unclaimed.
Taxes on the Winnings
Although the couple managed to claim their prize on time, they still have to pay taxes. A total of 40.05% will be deducted from their winnings: 37% federal tax and 3.05% state tax in Indiana.
